Pre-Travel preparation

There is a considerable list of immunisations required for various parts of the world and some of these need to be initiated well in advance of travel. For example Rabies and Encephalitis immunisations need to be ordered and administered at least two months before departure. Consult your doctor 2 ½ months before travelling, and ask which immunisations you require (and which need updating). (Common immunisations required include: Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Tetanus, Polio. Others include Hepatitis B, Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis.) Anyone with particular dietary requirements, including allergies should notify the travel company, safari guides well in advance of travel. There are often no shops in remote African game parks and it may not be possible to get supplies in at the last moment. In particular, if you need special foods and have taken these with you, don't leave these in tents as rodents and other animals have a way of detecting and accessing these. Best to advise camp kitchen staff to store these for you. (We once travelled to a Safari Lodge in Botswana, where one of the guests had brought her gluten free breakfast cereal with her. Her tent was invaded by mice and other rodents!)
